Beginners Guide to Crochet Stitches

As you learn how to crochet you’ll notice that there are a wide variety of stitches used in patterns. While I don’t expect you to learn (or remember) them all right away, I wanted to provided a list of the basic stitches you’ll likely encounter early on.

This will just be a list of stitches, their common abbreviations, and a simple explanation. If you are a visual learner I highly recommend searching these stitches on Youtube for great video tutorials!

Let’s get into the stitches!

The Chain Stitch - Abbreviation: ch

Step 1: Create a Slip Knot

Step 2: Insert your hook into the slip knot

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your yarn through the slip knot to create a new loop. This is your first chain.

Step 4: Repeat step 3 to continue making chain stitches. You will repeat until you have the amount of chain stitches your pattern calls for (e.g Ch 40)

The Single Crochet Stitch - Abbreviation: sc

Step 1: Insert your hook into the first stitch of your chain

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up a loop through the chain stitch. You will now have two loops on your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your yarn through both loops. You should now have only one loop on your hook.

 

The Half Double Crochet Stitch - Abbreviation: hdc

Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into your next stitch.

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will now have three loops on your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your yarn through all three loops. You should now have only one loop on your hook.

The Double Crochet Stitch - Abbreviation: dc

Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into your next stitch.

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will now have three loops on your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your yarn through only two loops. You should now have two loops on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn over and pull your yarn through the last two loops. You should now have only one loop on your hook.

The Treble Crochet Stitch - Abbreviation: tr

Step 1: Yarn over twice and insert your hook into your next stitch.

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will now have four loops on your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your yarn through only two loops. You should now have three loops on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn over and pull your yarn through only two loops. You should now have two loops on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn over and pull your yarn through the last two loops. You should now have one loops on your hook.

The Slip Stitch - Abbreviation: sl st

Step 1: Insert your hook into your next stitch.

Step 2: Yarn over and pull your loop through the stitch and the loop on your hook.

ch: Chain

sc: Single Crochet

hdc: Half Double Crochet

dc: Double Crochet

tr: Treble Crochet

sl st: Slip Stitch
